Here is some background and basics for the Telerik RADeditor we use in the forum.

Background

Telerik Radeditor is a well known industry standard Web Editor for ASP.NET. RadEditor is not simply an HTML Editor. It is what Microsoft chose to use in MSDN, CodePlex, TechNet, MCMS and even as an alternative to the default editor in SharePoint. Whether you need a mere Textbox with Google-like spellchecker, or a Word-like content authoring environment, the result is the same: clean XHTML output, fast rendering, widest cross-browser support, and tons of features:

  • Out-of-the-box XHTML-enabled Output...
  • Unmatched Loading Speed and Performance
  • Microsoft Word-like Spell-checking
  • Seven Ways for Pasting from Word
  • Multilevel Undo/Redo with Action Trails
  • Extended Functionality Through Integrated Controls

Basics

When posting a message to the forum, the RadEditor will be launched automatically for in-place Web editing. RadEditor toolbars are a set of buttons and dropdown lists you click to perform common tasks (e.g. make text bold, apply color, build tables, open the image dialog, etc.). Most of these buttons work in the same way as in Microsoft Word® or other applications-- formating is generally done using a Select then Do approach.

Here is a live demo page of the editor that your can experiment with the controls without breaking anything.

If you would like a PDF user manual download the RadEditor End User Manual here or the link http://www.telerik.com/documents/RadE...

The latest version of IE 9.x can give the on-line editor difficulty with line spacing and updated security features can prevent the popup windows. You can make IE 9.x behave and work like IE 8.x before you begin to use the editor by changing a quick setting in IE9 before you edit.

When you load the thecoga.org site into an IE 9.x tab (session) and intend to post a message:

1. Press the F12 function key to display the Developer Tools window

2.
Click on the Browser Mode: IE9 menu item and change the setting to Internet Explorer 8 and this configure the browser to IE8 standards

3. Press F12 function again to dismiss the Developer Tools window

Now you can edit any pages on the site without the issues. The F12 Developer Tools setting is session specific so when you close thecoga.org tab or exit IE 9 the setting is lost. There ought to be an updated site editor in the future that is IE9 aware that I can install; until then use the steps above.
